Remei India has started this year’s buying season. The company’s contract farmers will from now on deliver their freshly harvested organic cotton to Remei’s ginning factory. The enterprise will use this to create its traceable textiles made out of organic cotton.
A press release from the parent company, which has headquarters in Rotkreuz in the Swiss canton of Zug, states: “For the organic cotton farmers, for the Remei India Ltd. team and for us this is a very important moment in the harvest year, when the fruits of the long work since sowing in May can be brought in.”
Remei’s commitment to purchase ensures that contract farmers have reliable market access for the organic cotton. According to a statement, Remei gives them “a share of the added value and room for their own development” by paying an additional premium above the market price.
In the ginning factory the fibers are separated from the seeds. Next, the cotton is pressed before being processed further into yarn. This ginning factory was the first in India to receive SA8000 certification back in 2006.
Remi states that all those involved at the factory in Kasrawad held a ceremonial Muhurat Trading ritual to bless the harvest and the new year of production as well as to bring good fortune. This has its roots in the world of Indian finance, which holds an hour-long trading ritual during Diwali, the Hindu festival of light, while the country’s stock exchange is otherwise closed in order to ask for prosperity and fortune in the year to come. ce/mm
