The Zurich-based bag manufacturer FREITAG is launching the “DON'T BUY. JUST BORROW.” campaign to tie in with Black Friday this year on November 24. According to a press release, the online shop will be closed for 24 hours. Moreover, for the first time ever, FREITAG stores from Zurich to Milan to Tokyo will also not be selling any bags for a period of 24 hours.

But bag lovers need not fear, as they will not have to go home empty-handed, the press release explains further. They can take home a bag of their choice free of charge for a fortnight. To this end, the stores are to be converted into loan counters on the afternoon of Black Friday.

At the same time, FREITAG intends to send a signal that circular forms of consumption represent a viable option for the future alongside resource-saving, durable products. Borrowing instead of buying, using instead of owning, as the press release puts it. FREITAG has decided to support a sustainable economy by rejecting mass consumption on Black Friday, as this day of huge discounts is not compatible with the demand for conscientious and careful use of resources.

To be eligible to borrow a bag, you must be a member of FREITAG's F‑ederation customer club. Regarding the process, the press release goes on to explain that the shops will be closed on the morning of Black Friday and that customers will have the chance to choose a bag in store between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. There are 30 different bag models to choose from, with the campaign operating on a one bag per person basis, which must be returned to the same store by December 8. ce/gba
