On has launched a new technology for the automated production of performance footwear in a single working step. According to a press release, the technology known as LightSpray was developed at the internal labs of the Zurich-based manufacturer of sports footwear and clothing. In a one-step manufacturing process, a one-piece upper is produced using a spray-bonding process. The piece is manufactured by a robotic arm and then fused to the sole. According to the company, the fully automated production process helps to cut carbon emissions by 75 percent in comparison with conventional processes. In addition, the running shoes made with recyclable materials generate less waste.

The Cloudboom Strike LS, an ultra-lightweight running shoe that is said to improve performance due to its seamless upper, is the first model to feature LightSpray technology, further details of which can be found in the press release.

“LightSpray marks a significant milestone for On, not only in creating high performance products but also the potential it has to move us towards a more sustainable, circular future”, comments Marc Maurer, Co-CEO of On, in the press release “Our team is constantly challenging itself to rethink the status quo in terms of the design, development, and manufacturing of performance sportswear. LightSpray technology will propel us forward in our mission to be the most premium sportswear brand, rooted in innovation, design and impact.” ce/ww
