OceanSafe has emerged victorious in the final of this year’s Design Preis Schweiz against Lanz Natur AG and Loopi. From a total of around 250 applicants, the three members of the association NextGenerations made it through to the final of the competition in the Circular Design category. At the awards ceremony on November 6 in Langenthal in the canton of Bern, OceanSafe claimed first place, as the winning company has announced in a press release. The developer of fully degradable yarns from Bern earned this recognition for its DualCircuit t-shirt.
The t-shirt, which is made from the synthetic, recyclable polyester substitute naNea, was developed by OceanSafe in collaboration with other members of NextGenerations. “Everything used in the production of the t-shirts is safe for the biological and technical cycle - from the fibers and sewing thread, all the way through to the labels and dyes”, OceanSafe writes. Starting next year, the DualCircuit t-shirt will be used in the Swiss civilian service. In order to actually close the cycle, the company and the Federal Office for Civilian Service (ZIVI) intend to set up a take-back system, in which t-shirts that are no longer wearable can subsequently be processed into raw material for the production of new t-shirts without any loss of quality. The fibers that enter the water cycle during washing are “swiftly degraded”, OceanSafe explains. ce/hs
