(CONNECT) Fair trade and sustainability platform Swiss Fair Trade has presented the third Fair Fashion Award for the textile industry. This year, the focus was on fair labor practices, according to a statement from the organizers. Around 40 nominees were up for a grand prize of 20,000 Swiss francs in each of the categories, Established and Emerging.

In Established, the Naturaline alliance, made up of Coop, the bioRe Foundation, and Remei, was named as the winner. Naturaline processes and sells cotton from India and Tanzania in Switzerland, guaranteeing growers of organic cotton both the purchase of their material and a premium above the market price. “The alliance brings people along the entire value chain into the spotlight,” Iris Delruby Ruprecht, president of Fashion Revolution Switzerland and a member of the expert jury, is quoted as saying in the statement. “Not as victims. Not as recipients of aid. But as partners in an economic process.”

Moya Kala received the award in the Emerging category. The fashion label was born out of its’ founders, Claudine Tanner and Sabina Gasser, commitment to women’s rights. Moya Kala’s products are manufactured at a family-run business in Varna, Bulgaria. “What particularly impresses me about Moya Kala is the feminism that underpins the company – not as a marketing strategy, but as a fundamental business philosophy,” explains Yannik Zamboni, fashion designer and member of the expert jury. “After all, economic independence is a prerequisite for women to live self-sufficiently.” ce/hs
