The carpet series Overlay developed by the Zurich-based design collective Studio Komplett has been named as one of 29 finalists for the Design Prize Switzerland 2023. The collection was designed in collaboration with Lantal Textiles AG from Langenthal in the canton of Bern and has been nominated in the Furniture Design category, further details of which can be found in a press release. In total, 250 projects were submitted for evaluation by the Design Prize Switzerland, which is itself based in Zurich.
The three models Neonstray, Cubycloud and Rayday were developed by Lantal in Switzerland using New Zealand wool. They immediately stand out due to the intensity of the colors, overlays and shapes inspired by the stencil technique. In fact, the designs are more reminiscent of art prints than traditional carpets.
According to the press release announcing the nomination, the series is representative of the textile designers involved, namely Patricia Wicky, Seline Soder, Nedrete Mehmedi and Marianne Brun, who are responsible for independently carrying “the heritage of the Swiss textile industry into the future”.
As the use of the word “Overlay” in the name might indicate, the structure of this carpet series is multi-layered. This multi-layered approach is a reflection of the multifaceted philosophy of the start-up Studio Komplett, which was founded in 2019. The team combines experience across a range of disciplines such as design, craftsmanship, architecture and interior design, adopting an interdisciplinary and holistic approach in connection with projects realized for customers active in the gastronomy, office, real estate and retail sectors.
The carpet series developed in conjunction with Lantal is the result of an “intuitive and artisanal design process” featuring “an appealing and colorful look”, as Design Prize Switzerland writes in the nomination article.
Interested parties can discover the nominated projects for themselves on September 1 as part of the Zurich Design Weeks. ce/ko
