Forster Willi embroidery showcased at the Obama Presidential Center

(CONNECT) A dress worn by the former First Lady of the United States, Michelle Obama, featuring an embroidered design from the St.Gallen design atelier Forster Willi has been included in a permanent exhibition at the new Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, as detailed in a statement issued by Forster Willi. Michelle Obama wore the dress to her husband’s first inauguration as US President in 2009.

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago opened its doors in June 2026. It illustrates the story of Barack Obama’s presidency by showcasing key objects from his time in office. According to the statement, Michelle Obama’s “iconic dress” is still considered one of the most defining fashion pieces of her time as First Lady.

For the historic St.Gallen company, the presentation of the dress is a reflection of the international appreciation for the craft of embroidery made in St.Gallen. This appreciation is actually said to extend far beyond the fashion world. “It is a source of great pride that a dress featuring embroidery from our company is part of a museum documenting a significant chapter of US history”, comments Emanuel Forster, CEO of Forster Rohner AG, which is the parent company of Forster Willi.
